The Savage engine, gears and clutch share the same oil (one place to fill/one place to drain). That is why an automotive-only type oil should not be used. An oil that is recommended for gears and wet clutches should be selected.
Another non related item, but may be of interest to you is that there is a gear driven counter rotating balance shaft in this engine. The Savage does not display vibrations such as your Triumph 500cc twin was notorious for. Your twin had the same inherent vibrations as did all British big singles. The Triumph 500cc Tiger had the pistons going up and down together.
I had own British 250,350,and 500cc singles, plus two 650cc Triumph twins. My Savage is a rememberance of the British cycles, but made right!!
